Commissioning a Portrait

Commissioning a portrait is a collaboration between me and you. Without sounding too over the top, it is an act of love.. a demonstration of love, a creation of something that will last a lifetime and beyond, a creation of a family heirloom, something powerful that is a sign of the client's love for the subject. Even if the client is the subject this still applies!

No commitment is made until the client is totally happy with the process.

I am very happy to chat and discuss the details on the phone before we go ahead.

  1. The first step is finding a suitable reference. The photograph is absolutely key. Preferably not a phone photo (although some now are remarkably good) the photo needs a certain amount of detail and clarity. But more importantly the pose should be natural and preferably one that could be held for a certain amount of time. Big smiles tend to look slightly fake in portraits although occasionally they can work.

  2. Then we can discuss style, size and whether you prefer oil, watercolour or the less expensive option of a charcoal/graphite drawing.

  3. A 15% deposit secures the commission.

  4. Once complete I will send you a photograph of the painting and make any amendments based on your feedback.

  5. Once you are happy I can offer advice on framing or send you the painting for you to frame yourself.

  6. Postage is free and secure.
